ie for mac users

Just read this which explains how you can run ie 5, 6 and 7 Without using Parallels, Crossover or Bootcamp, or even having a Windows Partition!

I really need to upgrade to an intel processor mac!

Re: ie for mac users

ies4osx is a great idea (I used to use ies4linux ages ago), but it’s been slow and buggy for me. I’ve been using Q (by the same guy) for a light-XP virtual machine in the interim. It’s free and only takes up 1.5GB of space. Compared to ies4osx, it’s more stable, somewhat faster, and it can run the final release of IE7. Plus, you can install the IE developer toolbar. I think it runs on PPC too, so you might be in luck!

Here’s a screenshot too:

ies4osx does have a couple of advantages though: it uses your Mac’s hosts file, so your virtual hosts will work out of the box. Additionally, you don’t lose an hour of your life installing Windows. I hope it’ll eventually get IE 7 (final) and developer tools installed, since I don’t use my virtual machine for anything else after I found MarvinBeans to replace MDL ISIS Draw.

BTW, this post is what spawned all the ies4osx tutorials. Funny how MacApper and SimpleHelp haven’t credited it.

Re: ie for mac users

Q does look great. Just downloaded it and it runs. What I need is to dl some systems now. Which Ubuntu flavour is recommended? The problem of caurse is that wins are unavailable…

What I was impressed with ies4osx is that no systems are necessary.

Re: ie for mac users

Looks like his download area is now down.

Would either of you guys be willing to mirror/email your copies of Q or darwine/ies4osx in the meantime… This is exciting.

Re: ie for mac users

I don’t have Windows and don’t want to install it until (and only then maybe) I get a new Mac laptop with Leopard. In the meantime, is ies4osx the only option?

Re: ie for mac users

Big thanks Colak.

Although it’s really awesome that you can run these apps without windows or indeed much effort at all on an intel mac. The pages seem to render significantly different from a standard install. So I guess I’ll have to maintain my win machine for now. Q looks promising, but there seems to be a lot of effort required to set up and save out states…

Time to experiment.

Re: ie for mac users

If ies4linux has ActiveX enabled then yes. ies4osx is the same as the Linux version.
