Outgoing email headers

My new host (I had to change hosts) has a bug up their butt about email headers. If the headers aren’t formed the way they like, they will strip out your email address and replace it with yourusername@blahblah.hostmonster.com which is way not cool. Does anyone know where I should look to see how it’s doing email headers?

Here is the FAQ answer on my host’s website

Re: Outgoing email headers

TXP uses: From: $RealName <$email> (where $RealName is properly MIME-encoded if needed)
That is a valid “From:” header, so if they require a valid “From:” header (and that’s not a bad idea, really), then it should be okay.

ZCR uses: From: $email, which is listed as a header that should work.

… but you never specified what the “it” is that is doing email headers ;)

Re: Outgoing email headers

“it” is the from email address. Instead of being the email address that is set as the webmaster, it comes from the hosting address when people get the email. This is bad for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I don’t want everyone to know my hosting account login name.

If TXP uses valid headers, why is my host replacing the email address?

i believe ruud was asking specifically what script you were using to email. default txp? ZCR? postmaster?

Re: Outgoing email headers

Ah. I’ll have to ask my mom what she was using (it’s her site and she didn’t specify. I do have Postmaster installed on her site, it may be that.)

Re: Outgoing email headers

The problem is likely that the email-adress that textpattern uses as the from adress is not an email-adress that is configured at the host. For example if you have example.com registeredd at that host, you can usuallly only use (existing!) *@example.com adresses as the from adress, but not anythinglse@gmail.com/yahoo.com etc.
Textpattern uses the first publisher-accounts email-adress as the from. So if you change that accordins to your hosts policies, you should be ok.

Re: Outgoing email headers

No, that’s not it. I use opalcat@gmail.com as the email in vbulletin on the same host and mail from that comes out fine (I did have to tweak the SMTP settings—before I did that it came from the messed up address). The from mail does NOT have to be connected to the domain in any way, the header just has to be formed the way they want it.

That’s strange. Changing the SMTP settings normally doesn’t affect the email headers.

Re: Outgoing email headers

Well I changed it to not use a specific SMTP server (previously I had given it one) and it started coming from the right address after that. Might be more accurate to say “turned off the SMTP settings” than “changed”.
