Why to my images degrade on upload?
When I upload my JPG images they are noticeably different than the exact same image that is open on my desktop. I have checked photoshop and I am even viewing the images without any proof adjustments. As a photographer, displaying photographs this is exceptionally annoying…
I am using glx_admin_image to create thumbnails perhaps it is this script that is doing it…. I haven’t been changing their size on upload…
The images are less saturated and are reduced in contrast… in short they are lighter.
Any hints…? Please

You should post this in the plugin thread.

Re: Why to my images degrade on upload?
As they still degraded if you view them with the plugin disabled?
Potential troubleshooting sequence:
To test if it is Txp, upload a new test image to your web site directory using ftp and link it from a page directly. If it is also degraded it is not Txp or the plugin and another agency is at work.
If it is not degraded, then disable the plugin and upload the image using Txp. If it is degraded with the plugin disabled the problem is TXP.
If it is not degraded, re-enable the plugin and view the image. If it is not degraded it is not the plugin display behavior.
With the plugin enabled re-upload the test image and view. If it is now degraded then the plugin is affecting the image at upload.
Hope it helps.

Re: Why to my images degrade on upload?
Textpattern never alters the images itself. It creates a thumbnail, that’s all.
It’s possible you have a colour profile issue. Try viewing the local file with your web browser rather than Photoshop.

I suspect you are seeing a colour management issue.
Of all the current browsers only Safari and IE5 on Mac have the ability to render images according to their embedded profile. In any other browser images will display as untagged.
You need to convert your images to sRGB and then save them for the web without embedding the profile. More info on the issue and samples can be found here

Re: Why to my images degrade on upload?
While I’ve never had this problem occur with full-size images (regular upload), I have had a color issue with thumbnails generated by TXP. Does this happen (worse for lighter images)?
I think it is a problem with my server and Textpattern, so I gave up and created the thumbnails myself. As far as the color profile goes, the problem occurs on images with and without color profiles, regardless of the colorspace. Perhaps you’re in the same situation?

Re: Why to my images degrade on upload?
Thanks… it wasn’t the plug-in at all… I checked. Have tried playing with the profiles, and the converting to sRGB before saving for the web fixed it.
Particular thanks to masa alpha for the links to plain english explanations and showing me the way forward.
Thanks all,
Len

JMD,
Please post a bug report. We don’t know about these things until someone tells us.
