I’m confused as to which branch serves which purpose… is this correct:

SVN 4.x = used to be named 4.0 = no longer used => use GIT instead
SVN 4.5 = 4.5.x branch = still active, in case a new 4.5.x release is needed

If so, someone may want to update this page

Yes that is correct. 4.5.x still resides on Google Code though we will have to plan what to do with the branch come August 2015, since we won’t be able to push any new code there after that time.

All 4.6 onwards development is git (GitHub) only.
