Re: mem_akismet - Akismet/TypePad Comment Spam Filter

If I’m quite happy with Akismet and I upgrade, do I need to get a Typepad API key or will the plug-in run quite happily with only an Akismet key, or should I just not bother with the upgrade? Are there any internal mods that suggest I upgrade anyway?

Re: mem_akismet - Akismet/TypePad Comment Spam Filter

If you have no interest in using TypePad’s spam server (or another using their GPL’d framework), then you do not need to upgrade from version 0.3. The plugin is currently set to only support checking 1 server at a time. You will only need the API key associated with the server you wish to use. By default it will still connect to Akismet.

TypePad essentially reverse engineered the Akismet API so that it has the same interface. This was done to allow all of the existing plugins to easily be modified to work with TypePad. The biggest difference between TypePad and Akismet is that TypePad has open sourced the code and allow anyone to host their own spam server. They did not open source the spam identification algorithms.
