[wiki] What is a column?

The TXP textbook often says that the syntax of x tag is page or column! What is a column? This terminology isn’t used anywhere inside Textpattern as far as I can tell. Page, form, section, category and style are the most obvious terms used. Am I missing something?

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

A column would be where you have a page split in 2, 3 or however many vertical segments. It isn’t referred to within the TXP environment as it is a style feature, that is, it is up to the user to decide how he or she wishes to style a page using HTML and CSS. A sidebar could also probably be considered as a column.

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

I think this is irrelevant at all, Stuart! If this is the case then page should perfectly suffice as a column always happen within a page. A tag syntax is crucial whether it’s used inside a page (or template in the ordinary usage), a form or an individual article. I don’t know what a ‘column’ is really.

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

I wouldn’t disagree with that simsim but as I mentioned, a sidebar could be considered as a column and a sidebar could, and in many cases, is constructed using a form template, then called to the page template using the <txp:output_form /> tag so what is referred to as a “page” tag could also be used in a form because that form is part of the page construction. Forms of course can be used for all sorts of stuff such as articles, comments, comment forms etc which all have their own tags but the sidebar form would be able to use page tags.

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

What I mean is that I highly doubt they were referring to the ordinary meaning of the word “column”. Most probably it was a term used in the legacy versions of Textpattern which is no longer used anymore and wasn’t updated on the documentation.

Legacy? Is textpattern so old? :S Hmm, 4.0.6. is the 6th stable version (4 is actually 1 = 1.0.6.). Oh, yes TXP is quite old in years but not in versions. So I don’t think Textpattern is antique ;)

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

I agree that “column” is probably not the best word to use and I’ve been using TXP since the gamma days and I can’t remember that there was ever an “official” use of that term. Textbook isn’t as old as TXP so I think the use of “column” was a decision made by the authors of that site. It is difficult at times to come up with a term that means the same thing to all people. The problem with the type of tags you are referring to is that to simply designate them as “page” tags might mislead new users into thinking that they can only be used in a page template which of course isn’t true. It’s all to do with semantics really isn’t it simsim? This subject might be better placed in the Textbook forum where the authors could discuss their reasons for using the term. As Textbook is due to be moved into a new forum application this might be a good time for such a discussion.

Seconded. It’s poor documentation to put forth a term without defining it, and column as a concept has, it seems to me, nothing to do with basic TXP semantics.

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

Without looking at the context in which it was used on textbook, I assumed ‘column’ refered to the columns of the TXP database tables.

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

The Tag Definitions page has a Column Related Tags category which really doesn’t make any sense.

Is that what you referring to simsim? I vote those get moved accordingly.

recent_articles -> article related tags
recent_comments -> comment related tags

New section File related tags which gets the file download ones.

Re: [wiki] What is a column?

I don’t know if calling them “listing” tags might be more accurate? Having said that there are other listing tags such a “file_download_list” and “linklist” which are under other titles. There are probably others, I just happened to spot those two.
