typolight cms?

anyone have experience with typolight cms? currently testing out the demo and i’m quickly liking what it offers. i wanted to build a community-driven site without going the joomla/drupal route. although textpattern could somewhat be used for a community-driven site using the ign/mem plugins i still don’t think its quite enough at least for what i’m looking for.

just curious if anyone here had any good experiences with this cms. its a little restrictive as it requires php5 but i don’t think that’ll be an issue for me. whats also nice is that they appear to have a proper forum bridge with punbb as well. ooooh..

Re: typolight cms?

Yes Steve I use it. What do you want to know exactly?
TL need PHP 5.2 (for its future realises Leo wrote a news on his dedicated website)
The bridge for PunBb isn’t the most interesting feature in it : a real workflow, lot of modules (= plugins in TXP language), a completly xhtml standard back-end, easy to understand (visit the tutorials wiki website). I’d found the same interest when I’d discover Txp.

Re: typolight cms?

Not yet, but flicking through the docs it looks interesting. Thanks for the heads-up iblastoff.

Integrating PunBB is something I’m struggling with/putting off in a current TXP site, so I might give TL a go instead. Assuming I can coerce my host into letting me use PHP5 for all files in a directory, I’ll report any findings.

hey pat,

1) types of sites typolight can build – i posted a question here and so far i’m not having much luck in finding any example sites built with typolight that are beyond your basic brochure site. in which case i can easily just hammer them out much quicker with familiar textpattern. i’ve checked out typolightroom.com and the showcase section of their forum. i looked to see if there were any simple e-commerce sites (like rob sables popularweddingfavors.com done with textpattern) and the example e-commerce links i was given that were done in typolight all just used propietary non-integrated shopping carts like pinnacle cart and such.

i didn’t see any sites that take advantage of typolights seemingly powerful user/member ability either. although i really liked the demo ‘music academy’ template that came with the installation (it showcased backend administrators and separate front-end student members accessing certain courses related to their member group and being able to attach/send their assignments in and such)

i’ve gone through some of the video tutorials (building custom template and such) and it seems like they just take a longer method to what can be done in textpattern 10x faster as well. for example porting a template made in xhtml/css into typolight: correct me if i’m wrong but it seems like their templating system is more like wordpress where you insert random snippets of php here and there which i don’t think i’m liking but i may give it a try anyway.

i’ve noticed the news module cannot accept comments? that seems kind of odd.

of course this is just what i see so far with my very limited exposure to typolight atm.

one thing i like about it is that development seems quite active and fast. fast enough for people to trust leo and accept paying for the live-update feature is worth it and thus push development even further (hopefully anyway). he seems to be doing a very good job as a voice/developer/support behind his software.

Re: typolight cms?

I must admit this CMS seems interesting. One thing I am struggling with using Textpattern, is creating a community site, where users with one login can comment on articles (and edit their comments and profile), view image galleries and comment on individual images, and use a discussion forum (punBB would be my first choice).

I like that typolight has powerful user/member abilities built in and a bridge with punBB. I’m still trying to get my head around how pages and layouts are created though. When working I tend to shy away from cookie cutter brochure sites and coding PHP, which is one of the reasons why I love Textpattern, with it’s tags and blank slate approach.

I’ll investigate further and setup a local install on my laptop when I get the time.

Re: typolight cms?

i also really like their method of image handling…instead of textpatterns 2 “image” and “thumbnail” sizes, in typolight you can just use something like <img src="image.php?src=image.jpg&amp;width=200" /> for on-the-fly resizing to get any width/height you want. something i believe can also be found in symphony21.

Typolight has very flexible templating. You can select a layout type (static or fluid, number and placement of columns) and have typolight create the layout for you. That way you don’t have to add any php to the layout. However, using a custom template doesn’t involve much php anyway. For any custom layout there are maybe a dozen php variables to echo/print (example: <?php echo $this->header; ?>). There is a good tutorial here: http://www.typolight.org/wiki/tutorials:custom_templates. All other template content is managed in the backend manager GUI.

i’ve noticed the news module cannot accept comments? that seems kind of odd.

The new 2.5beta-rc2 allows comments on news items.

Re: typolight cms?

@iblastoff – I just checked out TypoLight myself, but found that it didn’t match my needs. First and foremost, TypoLight is just a CMS. By that I mean they do not offer any sort of blogging functionality that you get with TXP. That was the major turn off for me. I liked how TypoLight did several things (user management, image handling, templating, punbb integration), but lacking any sort of blogging solution, it won’t match my needs.

Re: typolight cms?

Having left Wordpress unable to get beyond the limitations of its modular structure, I ricocheted across Joomla, Drupal, eZPublish, and settled on joint evaluation of Typolight, Textpattern, ExpressionEngine, Silverstripe and Plone. I am working on a general write-up of the whole experience. The first three are quite comparable, the last 2 are actually written in separate non-php languages. EE augments php with its own set of powerful variables. I don’t think I need to say much here about any of the others except eZPublish, which was nice out of the box, but quirky and slow.

I am evaluating the experiences on a local computer using xampp’s apache package, with plans to reinstall or migrate to a remote server. Once I find one or two that make happy. Of all of these I have made the most progress recently learning EE. But ultimately I became disenchanted that ExpressionEngine (free version) is limited by its too-strict policy regarding non-profit use, and the pay versions are too expensive for me.

Tyoplight is worth watching. It seems like a young entry waiting for a summer of code to get it started. Out of the box, both Plone and Silverstripe are functional, extensible and intuitive, and Plone has huge amounts of strong support. But I haven’t gotten around to installing them on remote server environment, and am not going to do much more testing until I can be sure bluehost will let me install them OK. Textpattern is definitely up there (made my top 5 :) Textpattern was the last one I got installed, so I am still having install questions. BTW, have you noticed the explosion of CMS engines recently? There is probably going to be a shakedown in a few years. They can’t all survive.

Re: typolight cms?

EzPublish is a monster but it’s the most flexible out of the box with maybe the exception of Plone (Haven’t played with it). The learning curve is brutal though and you need a lot of horse power, if you’re not running memcache forget it.

I was using Ez when I discovered TXP and I found that it hit many of the features I was looking for with 1/10 the footprint.
