Textplates '07 Launch
The 2nd annual Textpattern Template Competition, Textplates ‘07, is finally here. The competition is back with a brand new website and some amazing prizes ($11,000 worth) that are sure to make it even better than last year’s.
I’ve been working really hard on launching this, so please check out the website and help me spread the word!

wow, nice looking site. Great looking competition. I’m in this year…
How about altering the info kit, (while it’s still early days) so that entries are required to use Burt Garcia’s excellent hcg_templates guidelines.
It would make installing all the resulting templates WAY more useful and far less of a chore to install without sacrificing the flexibility a user needs.

Great site. You may want to make the due date more visible. It took me quite awhile to find it at the very bottom of the instructions, and the due date inside the downloadable PDF is wrong.

Thanks alot everyone! Is hcg_templates stable? Is it likely to be integrated into the main branch?
kevin: The due date in the pdf should be fixed. Also, the due date is shown at the top of the “Info” page. Do you think it should go somewhere else?
Thanks again everybody!

mcw_templates, which is the basis of hcg_templates, has been around for a long time. Any kind of easy way to upload a template would be very beneficial, this frees the template designer from writing up lengthy installation instructions and the user takes but 5 minutes to install a new template.
As for a templating mechanism being added to the main branch, ask Zem:

Yep, have the entrants use the hcg naming conventions, it’s simple and you canstill use the theme if you prefer not to use the plugin.
Trust me, it’ll save everyone oodles of time, and make the themes more useful.

Re: Textplates '07 Launch
That sounds like a good idea then. Especially since I’m planning on making a theme browser and I wasn’t really interested in manually installing who knows how many submissions.
However, I don’t have any experience with the hcg system. Would someone familiar with it be interested in helping me draft some instructions for submitters? I’m afraid I have to focus on client work for a little bit and don’t have enough time to do it all myself. I’m going to put up a “Thank you” page soon and I’ll be sure to link up anyone who helps.

Here’s a basic outline of the system, it’s pretty simple.
This allows for one Textpattern install to have a template per section, instant skin browser :)

Re: Textplates '07 Launch
I have one concern/question. Why the requirement for ie6 support when ie7 is much more developed in regards to web standards and will be the primary focus for us in the now as well as moving forward? As everyone is doing their win mandated updates ie6 is being uninstalled and ie7 is being dropped in it’s place. Most of the stats on sites I admin are already showing a dramatic changeover. As a browser I loathe in the first place the are certain quirks that I would like stop debugging/catering to not to mention all the odd js hacks to support transparent png files. I can go either way so I suppose I am talking out loud.
The template should look good and function properly on all modern browsers.

does not work in Opera 9 which it once did.
@soulship
i agree. it is just annoying to care for all IE6 rendering bugs and will stop people from submiting really cool designs.
