I’m not a fan of captchas, so I was wondering about another way of warding off comment spam.

I’ve heard of a plugin for wordpress that keeps an eye out for comment fields that have 3 or more URLS in them, and if so, routes that comment to moderation. All others make it through. Now, all of my comment spam is just a ton of URLS, so this seems to be a good solution for me.

What do you guys/gals think? How doable is this?

Hmm.. Can you remember (or find) a link for the WP plugin maybe? That might lead someone capable on the right track :)

I just checked – actually, it’s not a plugin. It’s a feature build into wordpress. You can configure the # of URLs it allows before marking it as needing moderation.

It’s very easy to do. It’s just that someone has to step up, willing to write and maintain the plugin. If a plugin-developer is interested in doing this, but has questions on how to realize it, please joing the plugin-developers mailing-list, where I am very willing to answer code-questions regarding spam-plugins and help with the initial code.

Wordpress.com has this feature on, and it defaults to 1 as the maximum permissible number of links per unmoderated comment. If you’re a legit commenter with two or more links, your comment goes into the moderation queue. The annoying part is that Wordpress.com won’t tell you; you post a comment with two or more links and then the next thing that happens is… exactly nothing. You don’t know why your post doesn’t show up and you’re left to wonder if you goofed up or if the site ate your comment, or what.

So if you implement this, please make sure it outputs a “your comment has been withheld for moderation” message when it withholds a comment for moderation.

Textpattern automatically does this, when it holds a comment for moderation. (And yes, it will work for plugins, too).

Thanks for posting this plugin! I used to never, ever get comment spam, but lately I have been getting a few a week.

I had to upgrade to txp 4.0.3, but once I did it worked perfectly!

Fantastic. I’ve had to add quite a bit to the keywords it uses to determine spam. You add what you need to make it work great for you. After a good 2-3 weeks of getting hammered with comment spam attempts, they seem to have died off for now. It comes in waves for me.
