A Terrible Sadness

I don’t know how best to do this, so I’m just going to report the terrible news that a good friend of ours, Sivert Nielsen (sivni), has passed away.

After battling depression and panic disorders for many years, he committed suicide on July 16th.

Sivert designed some beautiful themes for Textpattern, and had undertaken to run Textgarden.org, a repository of themes that was just getting going.

I talked with him many times, and considered him a good friend. Confronting this loss is going to take some time.

I am very, very sad…
To those who did not know him: he was an incredible nice and an encouraging person…
I miss him.

Re: A Terrible Sadness

I do not know what to say.

I’ve seen Sivert’s themes and his designs are really good. Its really unfortunate to loose a fellow txp mate. May he rest in peace.

Re: A Terrible Sadness

This is truly a shame. We should kick up some theme development in his honor.

I didn’t know him, but I feel sorry for him and his family.

Re: A Terrible Sadness

I received an email from him on July 10th about textgarden.org. He seemed to be on top of it at that time. What a loss!

Re: A Terrible Sadness

I had no idea, didn’t really know him at all, we only chatted here a little. I did actually start wondering about him just a couple days ago, thinking that I hadn’t “seen” him around recently. To those who did know him, I’m so very sorry.

Please ignore me if I’m wrong, chaulk it up to my being clumsy but well-meaning, but it seems appropriate to acknowledge his contributions, especially in light of everything he was dealing with at the same time. I think we should put something like this at Textgarden:

<pre style=“width: 150px; background-color: #f3f3f3; border: none;”> Dedicated to the Memory of Sivert L. Nielsen 1973 – 2005</pre>

Re: A Terrible Sadness

I hate this kind of news. I really, really hate it. Especially when it was someone you knew or knew of.

God Bless

As a side note, if there is anyone you know of personally that suffers from depression, manic depression, panic attacks, bipolar disorder… stay in touch with them, no matter how trying it may be at times. Talk with them and listen.

I hate this so much.

Re: A Terrible Sadness

Wow, that’s horribly saddening news. I’m actually using a version of one of his template right now. He helped me with many little issues directly. We spoke frequently, and when I noticed his personal site went down. I sent him a message asking him if he wanted me to host him for free. I couldn’t figure out why he didn’t respond. But I guess I know why now.

In respectful memory my condolences go out to him and his loved ones. He always had such a cheery attitude.

Re: A Terrible Sadness

This is really sad news. I’ve been in touch with Sivert many times regarding styles/templates and we’ve helped each other out on several occasions. He will be missed.

I agree with Mary on the dedication.
