I have WF email accounts setup in Apple Mail. Ports were established automatically. Yesterday I stopped being able to send out via Mail, and sure enough the outgoing servers using smtp.webaction.com were on port “25”.
But the fact they stopped working doesn’t make sense because Apple Mail is not a server, and WF even says, “Port 25 traffic will only be allowed to our outbound email server – smtp.webfaction.com.” I’ve tried changing them to ports 465 or 587, as indicated in the WF notice, but I can’t get it to work anymore.
Just after I finally had all my associated mail accounts (different projects) configured and working on one client. A first after years of trying. Short lived. Sigh
Edit: Apple Mail is actually indicating that the outgoing server (smtp.webfaction.com) is “offline”, regardless of which port I use. Anyone else having that problem, or am I the only lucky one.
Edit 2: Got it working. It was actually two problems. Docs for Mail El Capitan make clear it’s port 587. But the real problem for me, apparently was my “mailbox name” was the email and not the actual name. Changed that and the warp drive fired up instantly. Star bound! [My inbound mail was working, so it could be my outbound mail wasn’t working from the start and I didn’t realize it because I was receiving mail.]

Destry – Your inbox in apple mail can be called anything. Your user name MUST be the same as your WebFaction MAILBOX. i use mailbox names in the form of DOMAIN_EMAIL. eg. bicilogic_coppi This USERNAME has to be used for incoming and outgoingsettings…
My settings are imap and i have always used port 587. For outgoing I set: use SSL and authentication: password.

Regarding HTTPS
We want to move to it at CSF, and it looks like letsencrypt.org (LE) is now pubic beta and making free certificates available, but it’s a bit over my head.
A couple of related but independent questions:
- LE has an Apache plugin, apparently, for installing the certificate… Can that be used at WebFaction? (I’m guessing yes since it’s Apache servers, but not sure if there are some constraints in the access requirements.)
- What does this HTTPS info at WF mean… Can you just turn on HTTPS, or do you still need to buy/acquire a certificate somewhere, such as from LE?
Any help spinning me in the right direction is appreciated.

Looks like it’s not currently possible via an automatic route, but that WF thinking about it (all posts tagged lets encrypt on the WF community).
Seems too that the LE certificates are valid for 90 days only, so need regular renewing. That can be done but is a bit of a chore. This guy has made a ruby script to help ease that process…

Good spot. I don’t seem to be very good at searching WF docs. ;)
So if I understand all that right, particularly the comments from the WF guys in that thread, it’s possible to use LE with WF, but you need to get support to set it up once you have the numbers. And the certificates need updated regularly, but possibly with that ruby script.
More or less?
If so, my next step is probably just run the question by WF and see what they say. If they’re not inclined to mess with LE yet, then I won’t bother asking about it yet.

Don’t know about the LE thing, but at the moment you need to purchase your certificate and then upload the .pem and .crt files to your web server somewhere, and then open a ticket and they’ll install the certificate for you. I forgot about a renewal recently which resulted in a site being down for about 7 days (I didn’t notice!), so I got the files uploaded and contacted WF support. The certificate was installed about 10 minutes later.

Thanks again.
This is insightful too, on a broader scale of perspective about using LE. I also learn from that thread that two other sources for free certs exist too: StartSSL and WoSign. The latter seems to be a Chinese operation.
