With the ever-present risk of me over-promising something, would a from-scratch how-to (jeepers, lots of hyphens) walkthrough for Textpattern self-hosting (there I go again) on DigitalOcean, Linode, Scaleway or other roll-your-own SSD provider be of any use? I’ve got a doc that’s about 90% done and just needs a bit of polishing and impetus to make live.

DigitalOcean

Yes. You could generalize it, perhaps, to various SSD situations, and I’m sure Stef would be thrilled to help get it published on the blog.

Yes I’d be interested in seeing a walk through for Digital Ocean. I’m not a server administrator and I’m finding starting with a blank slate to be somewhat confusing and a little intimating (especially the whole make sure your server is secure and keep it up to date). I really like the way Digital Ocean go about things with their Droplets and pricing structure though.

Re: Is kaizengarden down? Yes it is. Please move on!

As a former TxD & TxD 2 lifer, I’m sorry to see so many familiar names suffering a fate played out twice before already. I have visited the Kaizen forums from time to time, hoping to see the postmortem that was promised after the death of TxD 2. I’ve never seen it.

I moved to Digital Ocean after TxD. There’s a lot to learn about setting up and running a server. DO has a lot of good tutorials, though. Handing off e-mail to people who know e-mail and putting SSH on a non-standard port goes a long way toward increasing security and reducing the amount of effort required to maintain it. (I had a long, long list of banned Chinese IP addresses before I moved SSH off of port 22.)

Anyway – sorry to see Jacques having such a rough time of it and hoping people manage to find a stable home.

I also looked – many times – in vain for the “Great Explanation”. It will never come.

I don’t think that Jacques ever did manage to communicate with Dean after the demise of Textdrive 2.0 in spite of his many attempts to make contact.

I would love to have confirmation that someone has in fact had a meaningful conversation with his Deaness.
But I suspect that Dean Allen is now a voiceless entity. Perhaps he is doing “Meaningful Labor” in his vineyards tending to his grapes.

And so it goes.

I hate to say it, because I have a lot of respect and sympathy for Jacques and what he’s been through — not only with not getting his due from TextDrive, but with his valiant efforts to rescue those former TextDrivers that were also cast to the sea. But the lack of communication over the last many weeks, and the unanswered support requests… That isn’t doing it right. It’s just omens of TextDrive all over again. Anyone from that history is tired of it.

Agreed on all points. I’m sorry is pointing in the direction it is, and hope that Jacques finds lots of success in the other things that are (I hope) paying the bills and making him happy.

If you are only interested in hosting sites and don’t want the hassle of hosting email, then using ServerPilot to manage Digital Ocean droplets makes a lot of sense. It’s easier (and less stressful!) than installing and managing up your own LAMP stack.
