move a wp site from media temple

Hi all, a friend of mine asked me to help by moving her site from Media Temple to another host (possibly Dreamhost). The truth is that i have no experience with either hosts or wp.

Could any of you give me some pointers?

Re: move a wp site from media temple

With WP you need to be aware of the Themes folder. But other than thatchy not download the complete Public directory. Export the MySQL DB.

For those taks you will need to login into dreamiest and hopefully you will also have access via sftp to access all the files.
see this help tutorial

and a wiki

best of luck. and don’t forget Backup TwoTimes is your friend

Re: move a wp site from media temple

When I was looking to do this I came across the All-in-One WP Migration plugin.

The plugin allows you to export your database, media files, plugins, and themes. You can apply unlimited find/replace operations on your database and the plugin will also fix any serialization problems that occur during find/replace operations.

The plugin exports and imports data in time chunks of 3 seconds each, which keeps the plugin below the max execution time that most providers set to 30 seconds.

Re: move a wp site from media temple

Many thanks guys. The links are indeed very helpful. Now I have to figure out how to get sftp access in mt. I guess that I’d be able to create a new user via plesk.

Re: move a wp site from media temple

I reckon the easiest way is Duplicator plugin… but that is probably similar, and does the same thing as All-in-One WP Migration plugin.

Re: move a wp site from media temple

Hi tye, thanks again. I guess I would still need an sftp access as plugins are installed like that in wp. Or am I wrong?

Colak, in most cases you can install Plugins right from the Admin Interface.

Note: I once had a site on a server where the directory permissions were ratcheted up so that I had to use enter the username and password for the user account every time but I doubt you will run into that.

Re: move a wp site from media temple

Yiannis. Do you have access to the PhpMYAdmin in order to export the MySQl database? Does the CP of the current host have the ability to dump a copy of the public_html directory. If so you can grab all relevant files that way. sftp access would be the best way.

Re: move a wp site from media temple

Hi bici,

this coming saturday I’ll be attempting the move. I have all passwords (I think) to the webmin (or whatever it is called in mt) so I guess that I’ll jumb straight into the deep waters then:)

Believe it or not, moving a WP site is much easier than TXP. Usually I don’t need to enter to PHPmyAdmin. I also recommend Duplicator and All-in-One WP Migration. The difference is the first one doesn’t need a previous WP installation, instead with the second one it does. Both work so well. I suggest you to see some tutorial on YouTube about how to migrate with these plugins. I learnt in that way :)
I would like to know if I can help you with something else.
Regards

Re: move a wp site from media temple

Just an update. I managed to get all info on this but the site is absolutely huge!!!! It took over 1 hour retrieving the file size of a particular folder. I stopped the process as it was getting too much. I understand that site5 offers free migrations so I pointed my friend there as – with my connection – it would have taken months!

Thanks all for all your time and help on this one!
