How to question about Subdomain, intranet of sorts..??

Hello, I have a site, importer with product descriptions, bunch of downloadable product files for customers.. I also have a section for internal use, that holds files not for customers viewing..
I use cbe_frontauth, cbe_members for this, login to the hidden files etc..
I was curious, would it be any benefit to keep the two separate..?

I was thinking a subdomain of some type, member.website.com, would I need a seperate textpattern install..? Would I be able to share the same files directory, since some files are on both places.?

Not sure if Im making much sense, if its worth doing this, or am I making a problem out of nothing..?

Any ideas/suggestions???
