It’s blueish. In my top ten there would certainly be mustard yellow.

I’m very fond of blue myself and quite like #26466D and #2374AB.

Coolors is a really fun site, thank you for sharing, Michael.

Re: The Colors Used by the Ten Most Popular Sites

When you start reading up on the psychology of color theory, you can understand why there’s a lot of blue in the business sector, generally, and tech sector especially. I’m surprised the author didn’t talk about the psychology side of colour, considering he went to such length to cover everything else.

There are some well-know exceptions, of course. Here’s a few that quickly came to mind:

  • Starbucks (green) — probably because ‘sea’, ‘Emerald City’ (Seattle), ‘mermaid tails’ are typically green, conceptually speaking
  • UPS (brown) — probably because paper/cardboard packaging is typically brown/woody shades
  • Caterpillar (aka CAT) (yellow) — probably came from safety concepts, as bright yellow is a common ‘warning’ colour in labour sectors; and a warning colour in the animal kingdom too, incidentally, including with larval caterpillars
  • Rakuten (red) — no mystery here, land of the rising ‘sun’. Their commercials are appearing on French TV now as major competition to Amazon, and that’s a good thing

All of those use black to a signifiant degree too. I tend to think of black as the shading, boldening, dimensioning colour. Grey falls into that too.

Nope. Red is a “good luck”, “lucky” colour in the whole of east-asia. Many shopping chains use red in their corporate colours over here (trust, safe shopping,…).

Re: The Colors Used by the Ten Most Popular Sites

Psychology of colour is very dependant on the cultural background of the viewer. Like sound however, there are colours which can cause problems with vision when exposed for certain lengths of time. Certain wavelengths of blue emitted by LEDs for example.

As Philippe said, red is a lucky colour in Japan, but it is also seen as the colour of the communist revolution in Russia. In Cyprus, Red is the colour of the Turkish flag (hence a Turkish colour), so Greek Cypriots avoid using it. (which is the reason we are subversively using it in our website).

Sometimes conventions are imposed on us by manufacturers. Check the history of blue for boys, pink for girls for example.

Beyond Goethe’s Theory of Colours, I have to admit that my readings are very limited but even based on that, complimentary colours are culturally disputed. Red and Green in the modern world, Red and Blue during the Byzantine years.

The idea of primaries is also problematic. Red, Yellow, and Blue for painters, RGB, for the screen, CMYK for the printers.

And to get you slightly more confused, here are a popular youtube video:)
