Silly article that tutorial of yours from someone apparently not knowing much about CSS. Those units (vh and vw) are certainly not taboo and well supported if you don’t care about old browsers like IE 8 – and if you do care about them, you’ll need quite a few hacks to make your layout work anyway (IOW please serve a specific layout to that browser…).
