Sorted (pending final confirmation from Ross). Spam blocklist checking was snagging somewhere; site back to normal.
Great to know you solved it, Pete! Thumbs up.
Was it triggered by the default spam blocklist (sbl.spamhaus.org)? Should we TXP users be aware of anything in particular?

Yes.

I can’t think of anything specific – I figure the host tweaked a setting and the pings to/from SpamHaus were either blocked or throttled. I have a couple of clients on hosting with the same hosting company group (Paragon) so I’ll keep an eye open.

I’ve always thought this spam check is operated on comments save, but what the hell it has to do with comments display?

Yeah, this is precisely what I thought. I can only assume that it’s polling for updates since the comment was left. I’m stopping short of requesting hey, devs, it’d be great to have more fine-grained control over spam checking because it’s been a bunch of years since I’ve had to disable the spam checking.
That said, perhaps an attribute in comments
to prevent spam checking on display would be a smart thing. I’m saying this quietly because I’m guessing Stef would see it, poke around, make it happen, and post a link to the commit where it happened. If I keep it low-key, he might not see it.

Hi,
Just to say that I’m having the same problem as Ross on a site. The only article page which have comments open is really slow (french host OVH). How secure is it to remove the spam list?

If this was me, I would set the comments to moderated and remove the spam blocklist check. The extra burden for one or two administrators would be less of an impact than a really slow page load for thousands of people.

The check is done when comment form is rendered; it’s due to the ‘Your IP has been blacklisted’ message that would appear instead of the form.

Re: Massive Lag Before Page Load
we’ve been having ongoing problems with sbl.spamhaus.org on txp installs. Is there another approach we could have for future txp releases?

Ah, got it, thanks. I can see the interest of this measure, however, it looks like an overkill for me. Especially since it can provoke real annoyances, as we see. I would recommend to Ross rah_comment_spam
as a very good alternative, after a short initial training.
