The word "category" in the urls : www.site.com/category/cat1/ - why?

The word “category” in the urls is necessary?
Why so :
www.site.com/category/cat1/
www.site.com/category/cat2/
www.site.com/category/cat3/ ?

But not so :
www.site.com/cat1/
www.site.com/cat2/
www.site.com/cat3/ ?

Can man it remove from uls?

Thanks!

But then will be one problem – how the TextPattern will understand what is it: cat1 – the section or the category?
That’s right?

Re: The word "category" in the urls : www.site.com/category/cat1/ - why?

Were performed the next investigations:
was installed the plugin gbp_permanent_links
in this plugin was set the rule “category”
Summary: yes, the urls of the site became www.site.com/cat1/, www.site.com/cat2/, …
BUT all tags category_list, stw_category_tree don’t work.

In the output form were added the test words “txp:if_category = true”

<txp:if_category> txp:if_category = true<br /> ….
<txp:else /> txp:if_category = false<br /> ….
</txp:if_category>

And on every page which shows category was write: txp:if_category = false
TextPattern can’t determine the category.

Therefore : we can’t any way remove the word category from url? That’s right?
(We can it replace, for example – “c”, “docs”, etc)

Indeed the “category” word or “c” do need to stay if you are using them. I normally opt for sections instead of categories for that exact reason. I prefer my urls to look like directory structures. ie domain.com/section-name/article-name. I can think of some examples where categories are needed but more often than not they are not in my view.
