Do you listen to music while you write code?

Totally off topic, I know, but I’m curious.

Do you listen to music while you write code, in Textpattern or otherwise. I find I work better with some music on, I know of people who need absolute quiet, and I’m curious where you fit on the graph.

For me, I normally listen to electronic music. Recent things on my playlist, along with some lame descriptions:

  • Etherwood – “Etherwood” (melodic drum and bass)
  • Trentemøller – “Into The Great Wide Yonder” (atmospheric electronica)
  • Photek – “KU:PALM” (cinematic drum and bass)
  • Venetian Snares – “My So-Called Life” (7/8 time signature glitch music to eat babies to)
  • Burial – “Untrue” (UK garage)

Over to you, if you like to share this kind of thing. I won’t judge.

I normally go to free music archive or to tune in radio… Mostly when I am designing rather than coding though:)

You might like the netlabel section of archive.org – all are free and legal, mostly Creative Commons-licensed or similar.

I used to listen to that a lot – the voiceover guy made me giggle when he says ‘double you double you double you’ in the ident bumper.

30 bars cropped up close to where I live in the past year. All playing trance with the bass on max until 3am fucking the whole district up. I don’t think I could cope with that channel:)

I’ll buy those and direct them at the bars. Give them some of their own medicine:)

That’s why I have headphone hair. I typically listen podcasts (all the way from Joe Rogan Experience to some technology podcasts), but also music, mainly drum and bass and other electronic genres while I’m working.

Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin on repeat. Over and over again.

Actually we just have BBC 6 music on in the office, it’s the law for all graphic design firms.
