So what's about multilevel navigation for Textpattern CMS?

As I’ve read a lot of posts in the forum, there where requests for including multilevel navigation for Textpattern. As I’ve observed such requests first appeared in 2005, 2006. It’s interesting, when Textpattern will become a real CMS, not stay only for blog option?

I think many users need multilevel navigation on their site. And the lack of such a functionality in Textpattern still hurts.

When I say “multilevel navigation” I actually refer to such an adress
www.example.com/something/something2/something2/something3/something4/…/somethingN/

How difficult is to implement such a thing in Textpattern?
Or should I try to find another CMS which offers multilevel construction?

you should investigate a little further before making such statements. textpattern can be used in a multitude of ways and is certainly not limited to blogs!

Personally I’d prefer to develop a site structure that doesn’t require complete novels for URLs ;)

Still, currentlyly TXP doesn’t support more than 1-level deep sections (wet is working on that, IIRC)

Re: So what's about multilevel navigation for Textpattern CMS?

Though I agree Textpattern can’t be considered an “only blog CMS” (actually I never used it as a blog software),
multilevel navigation is a feature I always missed.
Sure, some sort of fake 2-level-navigation using section>category is achievable but it’s a mess from a usability point of view: you should try having to deal with non technical users and having to warn them constantly “in this section use only this category as a sub section” and such things…
that’s why some years ago I decided to use only sections while trying to resemble sub level navigation placing ‘fake’ breadcrumb navigation in every page and ignoring the non-consequent representation in urls.
All in all this has proven to be a viable solution for me, nonetheless a multi level nav would be more than desiderable.

Re: So what's about multilevel navigation for Textpattern CMS?

sthmtc,

I didn’t mean that Textpattern can’t be used in different ways, not only as a bloging tool. I use Textpattern as a CMS for my site. It’s a wonderfull CMS! But is has some lacks that are very important for me. That is the fact.

So how dificult is to build a solution for this?

It’s not an easy thing to change, but it’s definitely on the TODO list (if possible, before crockery).

Don’t read too much into this though. The fact that it’s on the TODO list, doesn’t imply that it will be in 4.0.7 or even 4.0.x.

Yes, I suspected it wasn’t imminent but only the fact you said “if possible, before crockery” caused me a thrill ;)

Re: So what's about multilevel navigation for Textpattern CMS?

I have played around with Crockery, and the new section pane is awesome, i just hope we can see this soon, and it’s going to be essential for my site. Is it possible to see something such as this for a summer 2008 release? x
