Re: glz_custom_fields

I’ve changed the link Manfre posted to point to your website. As I understand it, it was Manfre’s intention to change the link to point to a pastbin thingie that just showed the fix instead of the entire code, but somehow it still pointed to the original code.

Re: glz_custom_fields

Hi Gerhard, any chance of giving css id’s to the form and individual elements within to aid styling?

Cheers
Lee

Re: glz_custom_fields

Hi Lee, 1.1 takes care of this. This is the same principle I’ve used to get my plugin play nice with sed_section_fields . This weekend all subscribers will receive an e-mail with the new version ; ).

Re: glz_custom_fields

Hi, there. Just want to chime in and congratulate Gerhard for this great achievement. Have been using it together with MLP without any problems.

Just feel free to request localization. (I’m doing this now for MLP but hasn’t finished yet)

regards, marios

Re: glz_custom_fields

hey gerhard, thanks for the great plugin.

you should definitely look into the licensing info though. it wouldn’t concern me as i paid for the plugin, but as it stands, i believe other people are technically allowed to share the plugin with others (as has happened with zem_redirect which was a subscription-only plugin but due to its gpl nature, people are allowed to distribute it to others for free).

Re: glz_custom_fields

I’m confused by this, this plugin uses TXP functions, is invoked by and shares the same memory space as TXP, and as such, is “part” of TXP and not a separate program. It should have the same GPL License, and be freely distributable by others, should they wish to do so.

Re: glz_custom_fields

Gerhard> It’s all my fault-sorry… :(

You graciously emailed me a pre-release 1.1 after my existing installs stopped working, and I thought I’d screwed something up. I was tooling around on irc when people were discussing how to fix plugins that did not do register admin privs [?]. and manfre just fixed it for me and pastebin is quicker than email. so… mystery solved.

I apologize and hope that this does not screw things up for you in the future or make you not want to develop. I REALLY like your work.

I have never taken into account licenses for this plugin, so I don’t really know which one would best suit my case (I would have to look into it), but I would like a license that would imply the whole code won’t get posted publicly willy nilly.

You might find this list of open source licenses helpful. The fourth column of the table shows whether the license is compatible with GPL.

You won’t find any GPL-compatible license that allows restrictions on redistributing the code. Freedom to use, modify, and redistribute code is the whole point of GPL after all. All you can do to prevent wholesale redistribution is ask nicely, and hope people have the courtesy to comply. This puts developers in a tough spot, since it renders the selling of software rather pointless. Instead, they have to sell services like customer support or documentation. For people who only write plugins in their spare time, this isn’t very practical.

When Crockery is released it’s supposed to have a BSD license, which would give plugin authors more options. Until then, you might consider alternate ways to make money from your work. Some of the more well-known plugin authors have been able to “ransom” new plugins for a certain amount, then release them once donations add up to that amount. I’ve seen Dropcash used for this, but there may be other ways to go about it.

You could take the ransom approach for 1.2, now that word has spread about this plugin’s general awesomeness. Once the ransom has been paid, you’d release the plugin under a GPL-compatible license. You wouldn’t need to worry about redistribution, because you’d already have made your money. The drawback of the ransom approach is that it only really works for new plugins that do something obviously desirable, or for new versions that have major feature upgrades.

Thanks again for all your great work. I hope I’ve given you an idea or two for how to keep making money from your efforts.
