PvPonline.com Re-launch

http://www.pvponline.com/

^ We just put this site live. I’m excited about it because it really shows the capability of Textpattern to power a heavily trafficked site. PvP gets about 15 million page views a month. Our server-side developer wrote quite a bit of custom caching, but still it’s a pretty cool feat. I think it puts TXP well past just a blog engine. :)

Re: PvPonline.com Re-launch

Nathan, that does sound like a pretty cool feat.

Would you mind sharing your hosting and server specs, I’m very curious to know the horsepower behind the site and what versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP it runs.

Thanks.

Hi hcgtv,
PvP is hosted by Speakeasy and they are kind enough to provide PvP with a server. It is currently being ran off a dual 2ghz Athlon MP with 1.5gb of ram. I have also created some php to do server side caching, so that is helping with the load. The site is at it’s busiest time right now and we are seeing a little slowness, but nothing unexpected. I’m working with Speakeasy to make sure we’re getting the most out of the server :)
Thanks for your question!

Re: PvPonline.com Re-launch

Thanks Jay, good to know what specs we would need to run a high traffic site.

Re: PvPonline.com Re-launch

There is also custom PHP and AJAX calls all over the site, so take the specs with a grain of salt as far as just Textpattern goes….

SHAMELESS PLUG AHEAD***
Nathan and I (along with Rob Sable and others) are actually working on a Textpattern book. My main chapter will include a case study on PvP which will show what/how I accomplished everything. :)

Also note that we have put all the CSS as static files, so it’s not hitting the database to retrieve them. Along with caching, that seemed to help out a lot as well. Jay reports that the database is only at 20% load right now, during peak hours.

Re: PvPonline.com Re-launch

This is interesting to me since I have been looking to use TxP for webcomic publishing. I am assuming there is a bit of custom code involved or is it mostly available plugins? If this is addressed in the book, I guess I will have to buy it. hehe.

Re: PvPonline.com Re-launch

It is a combination of available plugins (with some tweaks), a custom php calendar, and custom php for the tags :) Rob Sable’s unlimited categories plugin was a life saver for this site. THANKS ROB!
